Stuffing the Christmas Stockings for the ARISE Posada – Last week the date and time was announced incorrectly. The stockings will be stuffed on December 16th at 1 PM. They will be delivered that same day.
Barb DeGaramo is the Coordinator for this event. She hopes that we can fill 300 stockings this year. We already have the stockings. The Christmas Stockings will be used at the Christmas Posada at ARISE for children ages 0 to 8 years old. The items that are badly needed at this point are boys and girls toys and baby stuff (there is almost no baby stuff). They will still take other items as well.
Small Stuffed Animals
Bottles of Bubbles
Small Cars and Trucks
Warm Hats or Gloves
Tooth Brushes and Paste
Small Bags of Snacks
Baby Wash, Shampoo
Christmas Angel Tree – Take a tag or more from the Angel Tree and buy a gift for about $10. Wrap your gift and put the tag on it. Bring it to the December 23rd meeting. The gifts will be delivered after the meeting. If anyone can help with that, see Patti Ellison.
Suggestion Box Gift Card Winner is Jeanette Bartles. She isn’t in the park yet but you could let her know! She won a Gift Card to Applebees.
Verla and Davell LaRue (previous reidents)– anyone having any information on their whereabouts, let the Business Office know. There is a woman is trying to get in touch with them.
Symphonic Band Concert “Sounds of the Season” for December 15th . The tickets are sold out here and at Trophy Gardens.
Water Pressure: Cathy has contact North Alamo Water about our problem but thus far they have not found it. City Hall is not involved in this. If you want to call about the problem, it would be the North Alamo Water Department.
Christmas Card Shower for Pastor Frisby: Bring your cards on December 20th to the Worship Service or you can drop them in the mail if you won’t be there.
Activities Welcome Packet – If you are new to the resort in the 2015-2016 Season, please stop in the office to pick up your Activities Welcome Packet. It includes a lot of valuable information that we’ve put together for you. It also includes some free tickets to entice you to join in some of our activities. There is a price for the packet. We need your picture for the Blog so if you are a couple, you both need to stop in. We’ll take your picture and then hand you the packet. I can guarantee that it is worth it!
Blood Drive: We are signing up to donate blood in the back of the hall after the meeting today and the signup sheet will be transferred to the Bulletin Board across from the Mail Room after this morning.
Choir practice will be at 9:45 AM this Friday.
Craft Show – We had a pretty good Craft Show for the first one of the season yesterday. We were told by a couple of vendors that they had been to a couple of others and it was like a morgue so we faired better than that. I had a couple people comment on the number of tables. Actually all our tables are full and paid for and I have a waiting list, however, some vendors just don’t feel that December is worth it and told me they weren’t coming so I just moved everything around so we’d have more room to eat.
Jams – The first jam will be this Saturday, December 12th. The “In A Pinch” Group led by Judy and Steve Good have signed up to do the first jam. Rod and Donna McKee’s team is on second and Bob and Kathy Doddridge’s Team will complete the December Jams. Thanks much, guys!
Dance – This week we will be rocking and rolling to Pelican West at 7 PM on Friday night. They are always a great time! Cost is $8.
The Agency Dance – Tomorrow, Thursday, December 10th, at 11 AM tickets will go on sale for reserved seating for our first Agency Dance of the year. Tickets are $8. Reserved seats are always signed up first in the resort and then opened to the public. Xx will be in the hall at 9 AM to hand out numbers so that you don’t have to sit around until 11 AM. Get your number and then you can return when Lee arrives to actually reserve the seats. If you could buy tickets by the table or portions of a table, it would be helpful. Checks are welcome and preferred.
Staff Appreciation Luncheon: We will be having a Staff Appreciation Lunch sponsored by the Activities Office on December 11th in the Large Hall. We could use a couple of people to help us serve. (we have helpers as of this writing)!
The Ladies Dessert and Salad Bar Luncheon is scheduled for Monday, December 14th at Noon. The cost is $2 and includes drink and table service. Odd number tickets bring a salad and even number tickets bring a dessert. The last day to buy tickets will be Friday from 10AM to Noon in the Small Hall.
The Sock Hop will be our Roundup on December 15th. The Chuck Wagon will be transformed into a Soda Fountain. We’ll be serving hamburgers, hot dogs or chili dogs, cherry cokes and root beer floats. Carlos Canos will be providing the music for the sock hop. There will be a Limbo Contest, a Hula Hoop Contest, some twisting, strolling and hand jiving. If you have some clothing reminiscent of the times, wear them. We’ll have a Photo Op Booth. Come ready to relive those “Happy Days.” Think Fonzie, LaVern and Shirley, Lenny and Squiggy and stars from the 50’s like James Dean, Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, Marlon Brando, Rock Hudson, Doris Day, Marilyn Monroe, Jane Mansfield, and Elizabeth Taylor.
The Ralph Kuster Christer Show that was scheduled for December 17th has been cancelled. Ralph is having problems getting into the United States due to some glitch with the Visa System.
Lone Star Downs – Our first Horse Race will be on December 22nd at 3 PM in the Large Hall. Butch and Pam Jensen are the Coordinators for this event that we hope will go over well enough to do monthly. There will be 8 horse races with 6 horses. The horses will move across the tiles based on dice. One will be the number of moves and the other will be the horse that moves. Each bet is 50 cents and each person is limited to $1 per race. The house makes no money on the races, however, there will be a redistribution of wealth among the betters!
Thanks to our Woodshop guys, Ron Jensen, Roger Richardson, Larry Martin and Bill Knecht for making the horses for the race. Thanks also to Jean Snyder and Lois Green for painting them.
ARISE Christmas Posada will be held at 212 San Bernardino in Alamo, Texas on December 16th at 5 PM and we are all invited.
Christmas Dinner: The signups for the Christmas Dinner Tables are on the Board by the bottom of the Loft steps. The Business Office will be providing $1 per resident for turkey or ham for each table.
Christmas Lighting Contest: If you have not signed up for the Christmas Lighting Contest and have lights out, do so by Friday afternoon. We’ve seen some places that should definitely be in the contest. We need time to get those ballots in the mail. It doesn’t seem possible but the Judging starts next Thursday, the 17th and the ballots will be due on December 22n. We will announce the winners at the Christmas Party. Signups to be in the contest are on the Bulletin Board across from the Mail Room.
Christmas Caroling: Karen Timko is the Coordinator and Choral leader for caroling here at the park. The date is set for January 21st at 4:30 PM. Meet in the Large Hall for directions and music from Karen. When you are finished, stop in the Library for Cookies and Cocoa after the event. We try to sing to those in the park who are home-bound or have lost a spouse in the last year or that are having some type of major issue. Let the Activities Office know if there is someone you want to suggest that we visit.
Christmas Party: The Christmas Party is scheduled for December 24th at 2 PM. We will be entertained by a young singer, song writer and guitarist from Razz Ma Tazz. He is Tony Longoria and he plans on going into the music business. He has been doing a lot of Christmas gigs this season. We will pass the hat for the performance. Bring an appetizer to share with your table. We think this will work better than one huge table as some people at the end, don’t get too much! Coffee, Iced Tea and Punch will be served. Instead of exchanging gifts this year, we are going to donate to a local animal shelter. Barb DeGaramo is coordinating this is a list of what kinds of items the shelter needs:
- Dry dog food for large and small dogs (Science Diet and other brands)
- Canned Dog Food

He will return again on January 28th from 8 to 9 AM to talk to us about understanding our blood results. This will be in the large hall, kitchen side.
Recycling: Wanda Wheeler has some storage bins by her shed on Lot 677. She takes newspaper, cans and plastic to the San Juan Recycling Center for us. You can drop them off and put them in the appropriate bins on her patio. Please clean and rinse the cans before you drop them off as she doesn’t want to attract any varmints.
