We all really enjoyed the Behind the Scenes Tour at the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, Texas and the staff at the zoo were just really fantastic. They made us feel very welcome and were really knowledgeable.

ANIMAL ENCOUNTER No. 1
We were divided into three groups and each group went down inside the area where the kangaroos are kept when they can’t be outside because of the heat or humidity. They were fed some whole wheat bread which is on their approved dietary list. They were pretty skiddish but wanted that bread so they came right up to us.

Next Animal Encounter
Next we were led into the pen with the huge tortoises. They were happy to see us because they knew we would come bearing something they liked to eat. Anyone who wanted to, which I think was all of us, could feed them some celery. They made short work on a stalk, I can tell you.

NOW OFF ON A TRAM RIDE
Our behind the scenes journey was all walking up to this point so we were all happy to see a tram arrive to take us to our next destination.
We passed many animals and stopped every once in awhile to take some pictures of them.
The giraffe above was waiting for us.
Our Next Animal Encounter – Feeding the Giraffe
Here Sharon Dagsgard is feeding the giraffe.
We all fed the same big guy and someone asked why we didn’t get to feed any of the rest of them. We were told it was because he was the biggest and the most powerful so it was up to him who got to eat the treats!
Sharon decided to give him another treat
After we fed the giraffe, we boarded the tram and saw a lot more animals.
Still as a board with his mouth wide open!
LUNCH IS SERVED
We all were welcomed with some iced tea which was very welcome.

UP CLOSE TO MORE ANIMALS
After dinner a few more animals were brought in and we learned a lot about them.
Texas Bull Snake
We all got to touch the snakes if we wanted. Paula spent the entire time in the bathroom until the snakes disappeared.
The coast is clear so Paula rejoined us for the fluffier animals!
The ferret was the friendliest animal of the bunch!
It was a great trip and I think all of us were really happy we came.
